The dissertation proof presented here, part of the Architecture Master's Degree program, consistsin creating a conversion and adaptation project of an old factory ruin, set in a historical contextand river front, in Santa Marinha, Vila Nova de Gaia.From the survey, analysis and interpretation of the pre-existence, we try to find an answer in theform of project, capable of bringing it into a new time and place. The preservation and reconversionof the ruin and its adaptation to a new program and today requirements is one of theconcerns of the project exercise.The proposed project, a Local Accommodation Unit, presents itself then as an object of study ofthis thesis, from which it opens the discussion on issues related to the very concept of the projectand its reflection on the built environment.The work is then organized in two parts. The first part questions the pertinence of the reconversionand rehabilitation of industrial structures when adapted to a new program, through the constructionof a historical narrative that provides a factual overview based on the issues and challengesfacing the contemporary city in general and in contexts of intervention in pre-existing buildingsin particular. The other part is dedicated to the themes of the project, which was considered relevanttaking in account the issues and characteristics of the place, the intervention in pre-existingbuilding and river front, the proposed method, and the importance of design as an instrument ofanalysis and thinking.
