The social and economic importance of Brazilian professional football, which is more developed in the South and Southeast regions of Brazil, is a national consensus. The State of Amazonas, in the North Region, is not represented in national competitions, which shows that football in the state needs urgent changes for its development. This study aimed both to identify the factors that prevent the development of the professional football clubs of Amazonas and to propose actions to contribute to its growth recovery. Data collection was done essentially through questionnaires applied to the managers, coaches and athletes of four professional football clubs in Amazonas. The data were tabulated in Microsoft Excel 2010 spreadsheet for Windows® software and represented in descriptive statistics. It was identified that the professional football in Amazonas presents a variety of factors that interfere negatively in the working conditions of coaches, athletes and other professionals involved in the game. All factors point to the lack of professionalism regarding club management, both in terms of meeting basic infrastructure and human resource needs, as well as in establishing strategies to increase revenue and investment capacity, to attract the supporters and improve the image of the teams. The lack of both adequate education and experience of coaches entails a limited view of workload and training methodology. The experience of the athletes in the professional / senior category does not correspond to the level of football presented in the Amazonas. This is certainly caused by all the negative factors aforementioned, in regards to either the general structure of the clubs or in the deficiency of the coaches' education. All these factors justify the lack of good results of the teams and, consequently, the lack of participation in the first and second divisions of the Brazilian Football Championship (Campeonato Brasileiro). As far as the growth recovery of football in Amazonas is concerned, a great change in the management system is recommended. It encompasses strategic actions, investment in training of athletes and coaches in order to guarantee a certain quality of the practice and a better performance of the players, aiming to achieve better results so as to ascend into nationwide competitions.
