In recent times there has been an increase in the incentive to rehabilitation, appearing a number of new programs and strategies widely discussed and reflected among decision makers and technical means, being also gaining proportion at the awareness level of general society. This work begins with the initiative to discover and learn about practices of procedure in the process of requalification and rehabilitation of historic city centers, thought a case study that presents itself as a paradigmatic example. The Historical Center of Vila do Conde underwent a metamorphic process, directed by the City Council, where, starting from a understanding point of the historical and urban development, led to the study of a set of actions that transformed the city in recent decades. Thought the analysis of several points that comprises the rehabilitation process, there is a enunciation of the most relevant in strategy definition and their contribution to the city's image alteration. The enumeration of various planning instruments, urban and architectural projects allows the analysis of the integration of different scales in the same process. The enumeration of political instruments and present agents, together with the analysis on completed projects allows to verify the relation between theoretical, practical e reality means. From the activity do the Studies and Projects Department, as a interventions' regulation and execution agent is possible realize of a diversity of attitudes and methods of approaching a rehabilitation of urban and architectural spaces, presenting a set of best‐practices. This dissertation presents and promotes reflection on the process of regeneration/rehabilitation of historical centers, through the case study of Vila do Conde.
