Resumo: | Construction industry has been following internationalization strategies in the past years. Several companies have set their businesses around the world, from Spain, to Eastern European, African or Latin American countries, among other world areas. Along with this entrepreneurial phenomenon, several research papers and publications have been published to support these strategies, mainly on what financial management and market selection is concerned. Nevertheless, there are insufficient approaches on the human resources level, namely on the concerns that a construction manager must take into account when facing the demanding task of preparing a construction site abroad. Hence, the development of this paper was supported by a comprehensive study of the omissions regarding the study of individuals that are part of these processes, moreover due to the fact that on the last few years most civil engineers on their first working years are tempted to work abroad. Construction output comes from the combination of several factors, for which the prevention of adverse situations and the study of the most suitable solutions is assuming a greater importance. In this context, the process of construction site preparation outside Portugal emerges as an essential tool to optimize solutions, minimize setbacks and mistakes, leading to an increase of the probabilities of success on the international missions of this remarkable Economic Sector. On this report, a model applicable to any kind of construction work taking place abroad is proposed, aiming to improve the preparation process faced by any expatriated construction manager. Therefore, a structured methodology is shown, composed by the main aspects to take into consideration when preparing international processes, namely the psychological, familiar, logistical, legal and fiscal aspects, among others. The minimization of these aspects, most of the times forgotten and of prominent relevance, reflected on a higher control of the construction site preparation and reduction of the risk of failure of the international mission, are the main advantages of the proposed model implementation. The model was tested and validated through a critical review by members of the companies that kindly cooperated on this dissertation. |
