The fact that these metal ions are quadrupolar (with the exception of thallium) means that they are particularly sensitive to ligand type and coordination geometry. The line width of the NMR signals of their complexes shows a strong dependence on the symmetry of coordination, which constitutes an effective tool in the elucidation of structures. Here we report published NMR studies of this family of elements, applied to systems of biological importance. Special highlighting is given to the binding studies of these cations to biological molecules, like proteins, and to chelating agents of radiopharmaceutical interest. The possibility of in vivo NMR studies is also stressed, with extension to 27Al-based MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) experiments.ElsevierUniversidade do MinhoAndré, João P.Mäcke, Helmut20032003-01-01T00:00:00Zinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersioninfo:eu-repo/semantics/articleapplication/pdfhttp://hdl.handle.net/1822/1248eng“Journal of Inorganic Biochemistry”. 97:4 (2003) 315-323.0162-013410.1016/S0162-0134(03)00315-514568235info:eu-repo/semantics/openAccessreponame:Repositório Científico de Acesso Aberto de Portugal (Repositórios Cientìficos)instname:Agência para a Sociedade do Conhecimento (UMIC) - FCT - Sociedade da Informaçãoinstacron:RCAAP2023-07-21T12:11:35Zoai:repositorium.sdum.uminho.pt:1822/1248Portal AgregadorONGhttps://www.rcaap.pt/oai/openaireopendoar:71602024-03-19T19:03:22.577495Repositório Científico de Acesso Aberto de Portugal (Repositórios Cientìficos) - Agência para a Sociedade do Conhecimento (UMIC) - FCT - Sociedade da Informaçãofalse
