Consumos de drogas em estudantes da Universidade do Minho: construções de significados

This article is the result of a broader research work about alcohol and illicit drug abuse among the students of Minho University, and it includes two empirical studies: 1- the characterization of patterns, incidence and prevalence of the consumption of alcohol and other drugs among this population; 2- study of the meanings and feelings, structured and organized in a descriptive way, which the students associate to drug use and abuse. Only the second study will be presented in this text in a detailed way, after a brief reference to some results obtained in the first study, by applying an adapted version of the evaluation questionnaire about alcohol and drug abuse of J. Negreiros (2001). In the second study, the significant personal descriptions of the individuals belonging to the three groups - hashish and ecstasy users, occasional hashish users and non users - were collected in thorough interviews and were analysed according to a grounded analysis. The results show, on one hand, the existence of meanings associated to drugs and to drug use common to the three groups, which refer to the share of the integrating parts of the current social-cultural speech, and, on the other hand, the building up of several personal meanings in some areas of the drug phenomenon, that can be interpreted according to personal consumption experiences and to the life trajectory.
