Resumo: The purpose of this dissertation is the analysis of the development and use of the act of communicating in a Digital Culture context. The investigation process seeks the analysis and understanding of communication and the new features that the multimedia factor offers the message. It considers the ways how communication based upon digital multimedia impels a new shape of interactive communication. The present dissertation involved a reflection on the relational dynamics established between Communication, Design and Multimedia. On one hand, structural definitions for the multimedia communication and the construction of their messages were sought, in a process mediated by the Semiotics and its study of signs, and enhanced by Mediology to a concept of cultural transmission. On the other hand, the Digital Culture is presented in a historical-evolutionary perspective, contextualizing the course that defines the multimedia communication as we conceived it today, in technological and conceptual terms. Finally, the new avenue of digital communication is analysed, where design and multimedia art are assumed as an investigation process. The act of communicating between individuals is a built and acquired process. Besides transforming messages into useful and comprehensible codes, multimedia is, in its essence, communication, and the resulting interactions of this process reinvent the communication model, turning it into a field of message collective creation.
