Intervir na memória. Repensar o futuro de um edifício cultural em Ovar

The present dissertation arises from the awareness of a problem, the decaying state of Ovar's old Cine-Teatro. As an inhabitant of the city, this building has been always present in my image of the city. After its partial demolition in 2016, carried out because of the considered state of degradation which was putting in danger the inhabitants of the city, only the main facade, the entrance hall, the ballroom, and one of the staircases remained intact. Due to the importance of the Cine-Teatro in the collective memory of the inhabitants of this city, the desire to write a new chapter in the life of this building emerged within me. Consequently, throughout this dissertation, the proposed intervention was projected to preserve what was left of the preexisting building, completing it with a new volume. Through the use of a completely different material from the previous, was established a dialogue with the ruin of the old Cine-Teatro, as well as with the Main Church and the City Park, both close to this building. The proposal was elaborated to preserve the building's memory and its importance to society, but also considering the current circumstance for which we were designing. Regarding this, it was necessary to study the urban space of the city, as well as the social and cultural context of the Cine- -Teatro. It was at this point that arised the idea to create a Museum designed to tell the story of Carnaval de Ovar, its uniqueness and the importance it has in the region, from what remained of the old building, together with the new volume.
