Resumo: The work of Brazilian Modernist writer, critic and thinker Mário de Andrade includes, in his poetry and short stories, figurations of Narcissistic loss, as conceptualized by Freud – whom Andrade had been reading since the 1920s. This essay investigates the moments that depict the image of Narcissistic completeness and the memory of its loss, which takes place with vio- lence and renitency, as in “Tempo da camisolinha” [“In the time of the little nightgown”] (from Contos novos [New short stories]). Rather than simply pointing out the above-mentioned themes, it is their formalization that matters, that is to say, the way the character-narrator reconstructs his life and traverses the paths of the Narcissistic wound and the attempt at its overcoming.
