Understanding regional patterns of urban morphology in Brazil. : Recent public policies and trends towards territorial restructuring

The main objective is to problematize the new urban forms that were consolidated in the regional scope, in Brazil, from the federal public policies of the last three decades. Theoretically, the text demonstrates the dispute in the conceptual field between the models of central place and city-region and its reverberations in the national debate. Methodologically, the analyzes are based on the results of research on investments in urban infrastructure (sanitation, mobility and housing) and in regional development that took place between 1990 and 2019, on a national scale. The objects of analysis are the urban centers and concentrations, the circulation axes and the sub-regional arrangements provided by the federal planning of that period. The results point to ongoing territorial restructuring trends that, without abandoning the poles as urban forms of development, advance towards urban nodes, urbanized bands and territorial fabric as the new urban forms that seek to respond to the global productive restructuring by functions inserted in a process of regional urbanization. Conclusively, the text resumes these functions of the contemporary city, consolidating the discussion about centrality, circulation and integration through an epistemological and historical vision. And it proves the importance of recognizing the materialities of the territory to tension the current paradigms of the urban field.
