Os instrumentos de reconhecimento do real chamam-se História, a arte de construir a transformação chamase Arquitectura."1 Álvaro Siza Vieira In this Master's Degree thesis, Building upon Built - Ruins as an instrument: an intervention and reconversion proposal in Lamaçais, consists on approaching the issue of architectural intervention in preexisting structures, particularly in rural areas, by performing a project of intervention and reconversion of three mid-19 th century buildings, which are currently in ruins.By doing this, I sought to obtain an answer in the form of a final project, ready to be carried out, from the analysis and interpretation of preexisting constraints, location-tobuilding, and supported by the definition of a methodology for action. The practical side arises along with the investigation and theoretical analysis, the latter being what substantiates and determines the proposal, turning it into a theoretical-practical process. I thus seek to reflect on the hypothesis which would better answer the need to relate the existing building with the programming and comfort guidelines which a building currently requires.
