Teaching/learning the mother tongue and modeling the profile of the 21st century student

Resumo: Presently, in Portugal, educational stakeholders are discussing the profile the students will have to show when they finish compulsory education, in order to be able to adapt to the 21st century society, in permanent change.In this text, based on a critical reading of a work document presented by the Portuguese Ministry of Education and its comparison with others which also try to define key competences that the 21st century citizen must develop to be critical and active, we tried to determine how the teaching/learning of the mother tongue may contribute to the achievement of that profile. So we submitted relevant information gathered in those texts to content analysis and concluded that a transversal approach of the teaching/learning of the mother tongue can play a very relevant role in this context.

So we submitted relevant information gathered in those texts to content analysis and concluded that a transversal approach of the teaching/learning of the mother tongue can play a very relevant role in this context.À présent, au Portugal, les responsables éducatifs sont en train de débattre le profil que les élèves devront présenter à la fin de l’enseignement obligatoire, afin de pouvoir s’adapter à la société du XXIème siècle, en permanent changement.Dans ce texte, en partant de la lecture critique d’un document de travail présenté par le Ministère de l’Éducation et de sa comparaison avec d’autres documents qui essaient également de définir des compétences-clés que le citoyen du XXIème siècle devra développer, afin de se montrer critique et actif, nous nous proposons d’identifier l’apport de l’enseignement/apprentissage de la langue maternelle pour la construction de ce profil. Dans ce but, on a fait l’analyse de contenu d’énoncés importants, ce qui nous a permis de conclure que l’approche transversale de l’enseignement/apprentissage de la langue maternelle pourra jouer un rôle déterminant dans ce contexte.Neste momento, em Portugal, os responsáveis educativos estão a discutir o perfil que os alunos deverão apresentar à saída da escolaridade obrigatória, para se poderem adaptar à sociedade do séc. XXI, em constante mutação.Neste texto, partindo de uma leitura crítica de um documento posto a discussão pelo Ministério da Educação e de outros que também procuram definir competências-chave que o cidadão do séc. XXI precisa de desenvolver para ser crítico e interventivo tentámos determinar o contributo que o ensino/aprendizagem da língua materna poderá dar para a consecução desse perfil.
