Resumo: The project for the New Cruise Ship Terminal of Leixões was considered in the strategic plan for the development of the Port of Leixões in 2004. The intervention has two parallel objectives: commercial efficiency and urban integration. The intervention foreseen for Leixões South Breakwater is composed of three main parts: harbor intervention, which includes a new berth with 360 m in length, a small craft harbor for 170 boats and a dry area with a support building; spaces of connection with the city, namely a multimodal corridor with two levels and 750 m in length, and other spaces related with accessibilities; and a main building, which includes the passengers station (transit and turnaround), as well as complementary spaces for commerce and catering. The architectonic intervention, corresponding to 2000 m2 of buildings and 5 ha of public space, intends not only to provide spatial and functional commodities for each program, but also to enhance the connection with the urban and territorial involving area, in the architectonic equilibrium of the whole. It is foreseen to start the construction works in 2009 and to finish the intervention in 2011. This paper focuses in the most relevant aspects related with the cruise ship terminal project, since its beginning, in May 2005, until its present state of development. Special attention will be given to the main constrains related with architectonic issues and in the domain of the port and maritime engineering, as well as to the manner those constrains lead to the solution presented in the phase of revision of the preliminary studies.
