Resumo: Objective: To analyze the acquisition of knowledge about diabetes in inmate women in a public chain of Mato Grosso, after educational activity. Method: Experimental study, in which 52 inmates were submitted to a semi-structured questionnaire, followed by an educational activity for 30 min and reapplication of the questionnaire after seven days. Inferential statistics were performed using the Wilcoxon test. Results: It was shown an increased knowledge about the relationship between the genetics of the individual and the development of the disease, between healthy eating and the development of diabetes, between obesity and hypertension with diabetes, and existing treatments and difference in the treatment of type I and II diabetes. Inmates also expanded their knowledge regarding signs and symptoms and visual problems as one of the complications of diabetes patients. However, there was no increase in knowledge about the existence of cure and concern about developing diabetes. Conclusion: The effectiveness of the educational activity was observed due to the expansion of the previous knowledge, which makes it possible to direct the care and preventive activities to the reeducands and reduce the vulnerabilities to which they are exposed.
