Aspects of Sambaqui and Guarani occupation at the Imaruí Lagoon, southern coast of Santa Catarina

Resumo: This exploratory paper, using secondary data, focuses on a stretch of the southern coast of Santa Catarina, the Imaruí, Mirim, Ibiraquera and Garopaba lagoons and their surroundings, where 99 archaeological sites have been recorded, mostly sambaquis (shellmounds) and Guarani. A spatial analysis approach based on Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and geostatistics methods has been applied. K-means clustering and Thiessen-Voronoi polygon analyses were performed in order to explore the regional patterns of precolonial occupation. While shellmounds are closer to the lagoon and banks of the d’Una river, Guarani settlements are concentrated on the strandplain along the coast. This initial modelling makes room for exploring different forms of landscape inception and territoriality of these groups.

This initial modelling makes room for exploring different forms of landscape inception and territoriality of these groups.En este estudio exploratorio, utilizando datos secundarios, nos centramos en una área de la costa sur de Santa Catarina que abarca las lagunas de Imaruí, Mirim, Ibiraquera, Garopaba y sus alrededores, con 99 sitios arqueológicos registrados, principalmente sambaquis y Guaraní. Utilizando Sistemas de Información Geográfica y geoestadística, se realizaron análisis de cluster y polígonos de Thiessen-Voronoi para analizar los patrones de ocupación regional. Identificamos patrones distintos para las poblaciones sambaquieiras y Guaraní: mientras que las poblaciones sambaquieiras se distribuyen a lo largo de las lagunas y riberas del río d'Una, los sitios Guaraní se concentran en las antiguas terrazas entre el río D'Una y la costa. Este modelo inicial abre espacio para explorar las diferentes formas de organización social y territorialidad de estos grupos.Neste estudo exploratório, usando dados secundários, focamos em uma área do litoral sul de Santa Catarina que abrange as lagoas de Imaruí, Mirim, Ibiraquera, Garopaba e seus entornos, com 99 sítios arqueológicos registrados, principalmente sambaquis e Guarani. Utilizando datações, Sistemas de Informação Geográfica (SIG) e geoestatística, foram realizadas análises de cluster e polígonos de Thiessen-Voronoi para analisar padrões de ocupação regional. Identificamos padrões distintos para as populações sambaquieiras e Guarani: enquanto as populações sambaquieiras estão distribuídas ao longo das lagoas e margens do rio d’Una, os sítios Guarani estão concentrados nos terraços antigos entre o rio d’Una e a costa.
