Archaeological Heritage Conservation through Architectural Interventions in the Bairro do Recife in the 21st Century

Resumo: This article presents an overview of the conservation of archaeological heritage sites in the area known as the Bairro do Recife, deriving from analysis of architectural interventions meant to conserve archaeological structures revealed in the first two decades of the 21st century. The analysis considered the conceptual approaches, criteria, and principles, seeking to reveal ideologies and practices of interventions and the interaction with archaeological research in dealing with these places. The study is based on the idea of archaeologist Hugo Benavides (2013) on the role of archaeology as sociopolitical agent and on the criticism of the impact of capitalism on conservation practices. The results suggest the perpetuation of a system of power, evidenced mainly by the favoring of projects destined to privileged economic classes.

El análisis consideró los enfoques conceptuales, criterios y principios adoptados, buscando revelar ideologías, teorías y prácticas de las intervenciones y la interacción con la investigación arqueológica en el tratamiento de estos bienes. La investigación parte de la idea del arqueólogo Hugo Benavides (2013) del papel de la Arqueología como agente sociopolítico y de la crítica al impacto del capitalismo en las prácticas conservacionistas. Las consideraciones encontraron el predominio en la perpetuación de un sistema de poder, evidenciado principalmente por el favorecimiento de proyectos destinados a las clases económicas privilegiadas.Este trabalho apresenta o panorama da conservação do patrimônio arqueológico no recorte do Bairro do Recife a partir dos resultados da análise das intervenções arquitetônicas para a conservação das estruturas arqueológicas evidenciadas nas primeiras duas décadas do século XXI. A análise considerou as abordagens conceituais, critérios e princípios adotados, buscando revelar ideologias, teoria e práticas das intervenções e a interação com as pesquisas arqueológicas no trato desses bens. A pesquisa se respalda na ideia do arqueólogo Hugo Benavides (2013) do papel da Arqueologia como agente sociopolítico e na crítica sobre o impacto do capitalismo nas práticas de conservação.
