Between the perishable and the indelible: the waiwai xkmari

Resumo: Archaeological interest in the waiwai xkmari (manioc grater) emerges from observations on the use of flaking to produce the so-called “grater teeth.” Thus, it is due to one of the least perishable materials that the xkmari enters the archaeological debate. Yet, the xkmari can only be understood in its entirety if a number of perishable raw materials are likewise contemplated. In this article we seek to present information from ethnographic and ethnohistorical sources; from archaeological bibliography; and from recent observations on xkmari production in the Mapuera village, northern Pará state, to discuss the archaeological potential of the xkmaris and the role and limits of archaeological classification. We discuss this material culture item’s function as an articulator within far-reaching networks of relations in the northern Amazon and The Guianas, and as an agent within different spheres of cultural identification.

De esa forma, es a través de uno de los materiales menos perecederos que el xkmari entra en el debate arqueológico. Sin embargo, el xkmari sólo puede ser entendido en su conjunto, si una serie de matérias primas perecederas es contemplada. En este artículo buscaremos elencar informaciones etnográficas y de cronistas; bibliografía arqueológica; y la observación reciente de la producción de xkmaris en la aldea Mapuera, en el norte del estado de Pará, para reflexionar acerca del potencial arqueológico de los xkmaris y sobre el papel y los límites de las clasificaciones arqueológicas. Discutiremos el rol de este objeto de la cultura material como un articulador en amplias redes de relaciones del norte amazónico y de las Guyanas y como agente en diversas esferas de identificación cultural.          O interesse arqueológico do xkmari (ralador de mandioca) waiwai emerge a partir da observação do uso de lascamento para produção dos chamados “dentes de ralador”. Assim, é através de um dos materiais menos perecíveis, que o xkmari adentra o debate arqueológico. No entanto, o xkmari só pode ser entendido em sua completude material se uma série de matérias-primas perecíveis for contemplada. Neste artigo buscaremos apresentar informações etnográficas e de cronistas; bibliografia arqueológica; e observação recente da produção de xkmaris na aldeia Mapuera, norte do Pará, para refletir sobre o potencial arqueológico desse tipo de artefato e sobre o papel e limites das classificações arqueológicas.
