Risk factors for the development of intestinal parasitosis in preschool and school children

Resumo: | The objective of this research was to determine the risk factors for the development of intestinal parasitosis in preschoolers and school children of the Huambaló Centro neighborhood, belonging to the Huambaló parish, Tungurahua province/Ecuador. Methodology, descriptive, quantitative, cross-sectional and prospective study, the population were infants aged 2 to 12 years, the sample was of census type, determined by inclusion criteria such as belonging to the age range and the decision to participate, obtaining a sample of 52 children. The information gathering instrument was the "National survey of intestinal parasitism in school population" with validation and reliability, used at national level by the Ministry of Health and Social Protection of the University of Antioquia, Colombia. The results showed a predominance of schoolchildren with 53.8%, the male sex with 61.53%. The caregivers of the children were mothers in 61.53% with a basic education level in 36.54% of the cases. There are 92.69% of caregivers who wash fruits and vegetables before offering them to the children and 69.23% who also disinfect them. 61.54% of the children also wash their hands before eating. Seventy-five percent of children are asymptomatic and the frequent symptoms are abdominal pain and diarrhea. In conclusion, there was a predominance of male school children, mothers are the main caregivers of children, with a basic level of education, there are adequate hygiene norms on the part of the caregiver, both in washing hands before cooking and after going to the bathroom, as well as washing fruits and vegetables before offering them to the children. Similarly, the children have good hygienic standards in washing their hands before eating and after going to the bathroom, as well as the use of shoes and the infrequency of playing with soil. |

Metodología, estudio descriptivo, cuantitativo, transversal y prospectivo, la población fueron infantes con edades entre 2 a 12 años, la muestra fue de tipo censal, determinada por criterios de inclusión como pertenecer al rango de edad y la decisión de participación, obteniéndose una muestra de 52 niños/as. El instrumento de recolección de información fue la “Encuesta nacional de parasitismo intestinal en población escolar” con validación y confiabilidad, utilizada a nivel nacional por el Ministerio de Salud y Protección Social de la Universidad de Antioquia, Colombia. Dentro de los resultados se obtuvo un predominio de escolares con 53,8%, el sexo masculino con 61,53%. Los cuidadores de los niños fueron las madres en 61,53% con un nivel de educación básica en 36,54% de los casos. Existe un 92,69% de cuidadores que lavan frutas y verduras antes de ofrecerla a los niños y un 69,23% que además los desinfectan. El 61,54% de los niños también lavan sus manos antes de comer. El 75% de niños son asintomáticos y los síntomas frecuentes son dolor abdominal y diarrea. En conclusión, predominaron los escolares masculinos, las madres son las principales cuidadoras de niños, con nivel de instrucción básica, existen adecuadas normas de higiene por parte del cuidador, tanto en el lavado de las manos antes de cocinar y después de ir al baño, como en el lavado de las frutas y verduras antes de ofrecerla a los niños. De igual manera los niños/as, poseen buenas normas higiénicas en el lavado de las manos antes de comer y después de ir al baño, además el uso de zapatos y la poca frecuencia de jugar con tierra.O objetivo desta investigação era determinar os factores de risco para o desenvolvimento da parasitose intestinal em pré-escolares e crianças em idade escolar no bairro Huambaló Centro, pertencente à paróquia de Huambaló, província de Tungurahua/Equador. Metodologia, estudo descritivo, quantitativo, transversal e prospectivo, a população era infantil entre os 2 e 12 anos, a amostra era do tipo censitário, determinada por critérios de inclusão tais como a pertença à faixa etária e a decisão de participar, obtendo uma amostra de 52 crianças. O instrumento de recolha de dados foi o "Levantamento nacional do parasitismo intestinal na população escolar" com validação e fiabilidade, utilizado nacionalmente pelo Ministério da Saúde e Proteção Social da Universidade de Antioquia, Colômbia. Os resultados mostraram uma predominância de crianças em idade escolar (53,8%) e um sexo masculino (61,53%). Os cuidadores das crianças foram mães em 61,53% dos casos, com um nível de educação básica em 36,54% dos casos. Há 92,69% de cuidadores que lavam frutas e legumes antes de os oferecerem às crianças e 69,23% que também os desinfectam. 61,54% das crianças também lavam as mãos antes de comer. 75% das crianças são assintomáticas e os sintomas frequentes são dor abdominal e diarreia. Em suma, há uma predominância de crianças da escola masculina, as mães são as principais cuidadoras das crianças com educação básica, há normas de higiene adequadas por parte da cuidadora, tanto na lavagem das mãos antes de cozinhar e depois de ir ao banheiro, como na lavagem de frutas e legumes antes de os oferecer às crianças.
