Mental health status in mothers of newborns admitted to the neonatal service

Resumo: Introduction: alterations in mental health during the postpartum period have high morbidity in mothers of hospitalized newborns, constituting an important public health problem. Objective: To evaluate the state of mental health in mothers of newborns admitted to the Neonatology Service. Methodology: A quantitative, descriptive, non-experimental, cross-sectional research was carried out, with a census sample of 50 mothers of newborns hospitalized at the Neonatology Service of Hospital General Docente Ambato; the Edinburgh postpartum depression questionnaire, the Goldberg scale to identify anxiety, and the Beck hopelessness scale to identify the negative expectations that a person has about their future and well-being, were applied.  Results: In newborns´ mothers’ sociodemographic data predominated: 26-30 years, single, secondary academic level, housewives, primiparous; in the state of mental health: 66% of mothers suffer anxiety, 50% have no risk of postpartum depression, while 36% indicate suspicion of postpartum depression and 54% show a low risk of hopelessness. Conclusion: mothers' mental health status is affected in the postpartum period because of their child’s hospitalization, with the onset of mental disorders such as postpartum depression, anxiety, and suicidal ideation.

Objetivo: evaluar el estado de salud mental en las madres de recién nacidos ingresados en el Servicio de Neonatología. Metodología: se realizó una investigación de tipo cuantitativa, descriptiva, no experimental, transversal, con una muestra censal de 50 madres de recién nacidos ingresados en el Servicio de Neonatología del Hospital General Docente Ambato, se aplicaron el cuestionario de depresión posparto de Edimburgo, la escala de Goldberg para identificar ansiedad y la escala de desesperanza de Beck para identificar las expectativas negativas que tiene una persona sobre su futuro y bienestar.  Resultados:  en las madres de los recién nacidos los datos sociodemográficos predominaron: 26-30 años, solteras, nivel académico secundaria, amas de casa, primíparas, en el estado de salud mental:  el 66% de las madres presentan ansiedad, el 50% no tiene riesgo de depresión posparto, mientras que el 36% tiene sospecha de depresión posparto y el 54% muestra un riesgo bajo de desesperanza. Conclusión: el estado de salud mental de las madres se afecta en el periodo posparto debido a la hospitalización de su hijo, con la aparición de trastornos mentales como la depresión posparto, ansiedad y la ideación suicida.Introdução: Os distúrbios de saúde mental no puerpério apresentam alta morbidade em mães de recém-nascidos hospitalizados, constituindo um importante problema de saúde pública. Objetivo: avaliar o estado de saúde mental nas mães de recém-nascidos internados no Serviço de Neonatologia. Metodologia: foi realizada pesquisa quantitativa, descritiva, não experimental, transversal, com uma amostra censitária de 50 mães de recém-nascidos internadas no  Serviço de Neonatologia do Hospital Geral de Ensino de Ambato, o questionário de depressão pós-parto de Edimburgo foi aplicado, a escala Goldberg para identificar a ansiedade e a escala de desesperança de Beck para identificar ases expectativas negativas que uma pessoa tem sobre seu futuro e bem-estar. Resultados: nas mães dos recém-nascidos, predominaram os dados sociodemográficos: 26-30 anos, solteiro, nível acadêmico secundário, donas de casa, primíparas, no estado de saúde mental: 66% das mães têm ansiedade, 50% não têm risco de depressão pós-parto, enquanto 36% suspeitam de depressão pós-parto e 54% apresentam baixo risco de desesperança.
