Partnerships in protected areas: diversity of modalities, purposes, and effects involved

This article offers a contribution to the study of and reflection on the theme of partnerships between the public and private sectors, considering the repercussions and possible effects for the protected areas and territories involved. It focuses on partnerships that aim to support services and activities for visiting protected areas, such as the concession modality, which will be problematized from a perspective directed at the market and the prioritization of economic and financial aspects in the current context of management of protected areas. Based on an analysis of bibliographical references and the mapping of partnerships in protected areas, we present relevant issues related to the purposes that underlie partnerships in the scope of public policies and to social control throughout the cycle of partnerships, and close with the presentation of "public-community based" partnerships as a necessary agenda to promote local tourism initiatives. In the planning of partnerships, we draw attention to the composition of arrangements that value the diversity of the country.
