Resumo: This text is based on a study conducted on Lençóis Island in Cururupu (MA, Brazil), a region composed of mangroves and beaches, where a community of artisanal fishermen resides. Institutionally, the island is part of the Marine Extractive Reserve (RESEX) of Cururupu, which safeguards significant environmental and tourist potential. Therefore, we analyzed the implementation of the project "Community-Based Tourism (CBT) on Lençóis Island," financially supported by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) between 2011 and 2017, aiming to understand the alignment between theory and practice. We relied on ethnography, utilizing the methodology of on-site participant observation and data analysis provided through interviews with key informants. The results demonstrate that, even in the initial stage and at the end of the financial contributions obtained through the funding call, CBT has proven to be promising and strengthens the active participation of the community, which has embraced the initiative as a complementary source of income while simultaneously valuing and preserving natural and local culture.
