Resumo: In this text I present the basic information about the origin and development of the musical notation system used by the musicians of the Greco-Roman Antiquity. Based on the books of West, Mathiesen and Hagel, I deal with the relationship between the evolution of the notation system and the transformations that took place with regard to musical performance, showing that notation arose from a simple nucleus of symbols and expanded into a complex and extensive system. In this way, I intend to demonstrate that it is important to study the ancient musical notation from a historical point of view to understand its functioning and its relationship with musical practice and theory.
