Philosophical dialogues in Mathematics Education

Resumo: This work, a philosophical essay, explores the potential of the use of philosophical debate and, therefore, of the dialogical and dialectical method, in the context of a classroom, particularly with regard to the training of future teachers who will teach mathematics. To complete this endeavor, scenes and dramatizations are created inspired by the Platonic method of dialogues and, also, following Ricoeurian reflections, the construction of narratives in a believable plot. It starts with a statement attributed to the mathematician and philosopher Bertrand Russell to, from there, explore the characters' conceptions and beliefs in relation to numbers, mathematics and the teaching of mathematics. The expectation is that, among other things, it will be possible to highlight the analytical, symbolic basis, based on writing, from which the teaching of mathematics is nourished and which, on the other hand, contributes to a process of alienation of mathematical work by disregarding the contexts of production, distribution and control of mathematical knowledge.

Para completar este empeño, se crean escenas y dramatizaciones inspiradas en el método platónico de los diálogos y, también, siguiendo reflexiones ricoeurianas, la construcción de narraciones en una trama verosímil. Se parte de un enunciado atribuido al matemático y filósofo Bertrand Russell para, a partir de ahí, explorar las concepciones y creencias de los personajes en relación a los números, las matemáticas y la enseñanza de las matemáticas. La expectativa es que, entre otras cosas, se pueda resaltar la base analítica, simbólica, basada en la escritura, de la que se nutre la enseñanza de las matemáticas y que, por otra parte, contribuye a un proceso de alienación del trabajo matemático al ignorar los contextos de producción, distribución y control del conocimiento matemático. Este trabalho, um ensaio filosófico, explora as potencialidades do uso do debate filosófico e, portanto do método dialógico e dialético, no contexto de uma sala de aula, em particular no que diz respeito à formação dos futuros professores que lecionarão matemática. Para dar cabo desta empreitada criam-se cenas e dramatizações inspiradas no método platônico dos diálogos e, também, seguindo-se as reflexões ricoeurianas,  a construção de narrativas em uma trama verossímil. Parte-se de uma afirmação atribuída ao matemático e filósofo Bertrand Russell para, a partir daí, explorar as concepções e crenças dos personagens em relação aos números, à matemática e ao ensino da matemática. A expectativa é que, dentre outras coisas, seja possível evidenciar a base analítica, simbólica, pautada na escrita, da qual o ensino da matemática se nutre e que, por outro lado, contribui para um processo de alienação do trabalho matemático ao se desconsiderar os contextos de produção, distribuição e controle do conhecimento matemático.
