Resumo: This article is devoted to the formation of mathematics education in Russia. Although first-rate mathematicians were working in Russia as early as the first half of the eighteenth century (Euler, to name one), nothing close to mass-scale teacher preparation existed. Almost one hundred years had to pass until such preparation came into being. This article, based on archival materials, analyzes certain biographies of mathematics teachers of the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, examines how they themselves acquired their education, and discusses certain episodes from their careers.
