Laboratório de Sanidade Animal, CCTA, Universidade Estadual do Norte Fluminense Darcy Ribeiro, Avenida Alberto Lamego, 2000, Parque Califórnia, Campos dos Goytacazes, RJ 28015-620, Brasil. E-mail: foliveira@uenf.br Nine horses naturally infected with Pythium insidiosum from Campos dos Goytacazes were daily treated orally with potassium iodate solution (55mg/kg) until two weeks after wounds were healed completely. Data on the wounds regression and serum protein variations, nitrogenated substances and enzymes of the animals were determined. Wounds were healed completely in 28 to 56 days of treatment, and the treatment period was directly related to the size of the wounds. In addition, there were not detected any biochemical changes that allow us to infer that the treatment did not caused any renal or hepatic failure in treated animals. Based in these results, potassium iodate at the dose of 55mg/kg was efficient for treating pythiosis in horses.
