Resumo: The study of tree species functional traits can be a useful tool in the context of forest restoration in degraded environments. That is because understanding relationships between different traits and their interactions with abiotic components of degraded environments can allow stronger generalizations and predictions on the performance of different reintroduced species in these environments. The present thesis is composed of three independent chapters that have the same objective of evaluating variations of functional attributes and how they determine the performance of reintroduced tree species in degraded areas. In the first chapter, we investigated native tree species reintroduced in a degraded Brazilian cerrado area. We evaluated changes in functional attributes over plant initial development and the relationships between them. We found that the largest changes in functional attributes occurred in the initial months, and that environmental filters must have influenced strongly these changes since the beginning of species development. In the second chapter, we evaluated the influence of functional traits and growing conditions on the survival and growth of plants in the same study area of the first chapter, in two different stages of species development in the field. We found that, at each stage, different functional attributes contributed to survival and growth, and this can be attributed to different environmental limiting factors at each stage. In the third chapter, we carried out a study in another area which was in restoration process, where soil presented a fertility gradient. We evaluated whether variations in functional attributes within species were a direct response to different levels of soil nutrients or due to the different sizes of plants. We found that variations in most functional attributes were related only to plant size, which grew more vigorously in more fertile soils. In general, we showed that functional attributes varied over the initial development of species, were related to the environmental conditions of degraded areas and to plant size, determining the performance of species in these areas. Functional traits can be useful for predicting plant response to the environmental conditions in degraded areas and can help in the planning of more efficient forest restoration strategies.

Isto se deve ao fato de que, compreender as correlações entre os diferentes traços e suas interações com os componentes abióticos do ambiente degradado, pode permitir maiores generalizações e previsões a respeito do desempenho dos indivíduos de diferentes espécies reintroduzidas nestes ambientes. Esta tese é constituída por três capítulos independentes, mas com o objetivo comum de avaliar as variações dos atributos funcionais e como eles determinam o desempenho de espécies arbóreas reintroduzidas em áreas degradadas. No primeiro capítulo, investigamos espécies nativas reintroduzidas em uma área de cerrado degradada. Avaliamos as mudanças nos atributos funcionais e nas correlações entre eles ao longo do desenvolvimento inicial dos indivíduos. Encontramos que as maiores alterações nos atributos funcionais ocorreram nos primeiros meses e que os filtros ambientais devem ter influenciado fortemente estas mudanças desde o início do desenvolvimento das espécies. No segundo capítulo, avaliamos a influência dos traços funcionais e das condições de cultivo das mudas na sobrevivência e crescimento dos indivíduos na mesma área de estudo do primeiro capítulo, em duas fases distintas do desenvolvimento das espécies em campo. Descobrimos que em cada uma das fases, diferentes atributos funcionais contribuíram para a maior ou menor sobrevivência e crescimento dos indivíduos e isto pode ser atribuído a diferentes fatores limitantes do ambiente em cada período. No terceiro capítulo conduzimos o estudo em outra área em processo de restauração que apresentava um gradiente de fertilidade do solo. Avaliamos se as variações nos atributos funcionais dentro de espécies foram uma resposta direta aos diferentes níveis de nutrientes do solo ou se foram devido ao tamanho diferencial dos indivíduos. Encontramos que as variações na maioria dos atributos funcionais se relacionaram apenas ao tamanho dos indivíduos que cresceram mais vigorosamente em solos mais férteis. De maneira geral, nós mostramos que os atributos funcionais variaram ao longo do desenvolvimento das espécies, se relacionaram às condições ambientais das áreas degradadas e ao tamanho dos indivíduos, determinando o desempenho das espécies nestas áreas. Os traços funcionais podem ser utilizados para prever a resposta das plantas às condições ambientais das áreas degradadas em que são reintroduzidas, podendo, desta forma, auxiliar o planejamento de estratégias mais eficientes de restauração florestal.Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (CAPES)porUniversidade Federal de São CarlosCâmpus São CarlosPrograma de Pós-Graduação em Ciências Ambientais - PPGCAmUFSCarTraços funcionaisRestauração florestalÁreas degradadasFunctional traitsForest restorationDegraded areasCIENCIAS BIOLOGICAS::ECOLOGIACIENCIAS BIOLOGICASVariação de atributos funcionais e sua influência no desempenho de espécies arbóreas reintroduzidas em áreas degradadasVariation of functional attributes and their influence on the performance of reintroduced tree species in degraded areasinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersioninfo:eu-repo/semantics/doctoralThesisOnline600600bc5687ce-6582-4bc6-a139-75e477ff311binfo:eu-repo/semantics/openAccessreponame:Repositório Institucional da UFSCARinstname:Universidade Federal de São Carlos (UFSCAR)instacron:UFSCARORIGINALFERNANDES_JanaínadeFátima_2018.pdfFERNANDES_JanaínadeFátima_2018.pdfapplication/pdf2681522https://repositorio.ufscar.br/bitstream/ufscar/9966/2/FERNANDES_Jana%c3%adnadeF%c3%a1tima_2018.pdf5bee004db6af500b3051db8b505191ddMD52FERNANDES_JanaínadeFátima_2018_carta.pdfFERNANDES_JanaínadeFátima_2018_carta.pdfapplication/pdf197106https://repositorio.ufscar.br/bitstream/ufscar/9966/3/FERNANDES_Jana%c3%adnadeF%c3%a1tima_2018_carta.pdf304e38bbcac6ea0124b4030c1594fe59MD53LICENSElicense.txtlicense.txttext/plain;
