Concessive constructions with ‘por mais que’: a functional-discourse approach

Resumo: Following Functional Discourse Grammar model principles (Hengeveld & Mackenzie, 2008), this paper describes concessive constructions with the conjunction por mais que. Using contemporary Portuguese data, from Corpus do Português (Davies & Ferreira, 2016), this investigation pursues two specific objectives: (i) determining the status of por mais que considering a set of FDG proposals concerning the lexical/grammatical status of adverbial conjunctions; and (ii) mapping, based on FDG levels and layer, the different concessive relations signaled by this conjunction in articulating clauses. It is argued that por mais que is a Lexical Conjunction, analyzed, at Representational Level, as a one-place Configurational Property, and that it articulates three types of concessive relations: factual concessive, conditional-concessive and restrictive concessive.

Amparado nos pressupostos teórico-metodológicos do modelo da Gramática Discursivo- Funcional (doravante GDF), de Hengeveld e Mackenzie (2008), este artigo propõe uma descrição de construções concessivas intensivas articuladas pela conjunção por mais que. Com base em ocorrências de uso do português contemporâneo, extraídas do Corpus do Português (Davies & Ferreira, 2016), esta investigação se desenvolve a partir de dois objetivos específicos: (i) precisar o estatuto de por mais que tendo em vista o conjunto de trabalhos que, à luz da GDF, tem discutido o estatuto lexical e/ou gramatical de conjunções adverbiais; e (ii) mapear, com base nos níveis e nas camadas que estruturam a GDF, a natureza da(s) relação(ões) concessiva(s) instaurada(s) na articulação entre orações por meio de por mais que. Os resultados aqui apresentados revelam que por mais que é uma Conjunção Lexical, analisada, no Nível Representacional, como uma Propriedade Configuracional de um-lugar, e que articula três tipos de relações concessivas: concessivas factuais, concessivo- condicionais e concessivas restritivas.
