DEAF STUDENTS AT THE PUBLIC SCHOOL: CHALLENGES FOR BILINGUAL EDUCATION

Resumo: This article concerns the challenges of bilingual education for deaf students in the public school. It presents considerations based on the results of a research developed in two public schools in Belo Horizonte – MG, Brazil: two cases of teaching-learning processes in Portuguese Language area, by two deaf students in the 5th grade. The study made use of direct observation of the context and short semi-structured interviews. We can affirm that both schools offered the set of support provided for attending the students, however, the work still seems to be organized in a context of adaptation of deaf students to pedagogical projects, from the paradigm of deafness only as a disability.  The use of Libras was perceived only as a mediator in the learning of the Portuguese Language; in addition without considering the linguistic particularities of deaf students; as well. the inattention to the construction and/or affirmation of their identities. It confirms how far we are from a bilingual and bicultural teaching for the deaf from the perspective of Inclusive Education.

Presenta consideraciones basadas en los resultados de una investigación desarrollada en dos escuelas públicas en Belo Horizonte – MG, Brasil: dos circunstancias de enseñanza y aprendizaje en el área de la Lengua Portuguesa por dos estudiantes sordas en el 5º grado de Primaria. Se utilizó la observación directa del contexto y entrevistas cortas semiestructuradas. Es posible afirmar que las dos escuelas ofrecieron el conjunto de apoyos previstos para la atención de los estudiantes, sin embargo, el trabajo todavía parece estar organizado en un contexto de adaptación de los estudiantes sordos a los proyectos pedagógicos, desde el paradigma de la sordera sólo como una discapacidad. El uso de Libras fue percibido solo como un mediador en clases de Lengua Portuguesa; además de no considerar las particularidades lingüísticas de los estudiantes sordos; así como falta de atención a la construcción y/o afirmación de sus identidades. Confirma lo lejos que estamos de una enseñanza bilingüe y bicultural para sordos desde la perspectiva de la Educación Inclusiva.Este artigo aborda os desafios para uma educação bilíngue de estudantes surdos na escola comum. Apresenta considerações mediante os resultados de pesquisa desenvolvida em duas escolas públicas de Belo Horizonte – MG: duas circunstâncias de ensino-aprendizagem na área de Língua Portuguesa por parte de duas estudantes surdas no 5º ano do Ensino Fundamental. Utilizou-se de observação direta do contexto e entrevistas curtas semiestruturadas. É possível afirmar que ambas as escolas ofereciam o conjunto do suporte previsto para o atendimento das alunas, entretanto, o trabalho parece ainda estar organizado numa perspectiva de adaptação do estudante surdo aos projetos pedagógicos, a partir do paradigma da surdez apenas enquanto deficiência. Percebeu-se o uso da Libras apenas como mediadora na aprendizagem da Língua Portuguesa; além da desconsideração das particularidades linguísticas dos estudantes surdos; bem como a desatenção com a construção e/ou afirmação de suas identidades.
