The incidence of immunization errors in Minas Gerais, Brazil: cross-sectional study, 2015

Objective: To evaluate the incidence of immunization error in the public health service of the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. Methods: Cross-sectional study from the errors reported in the Information System of the National Immunization Program between 2015 and 2019. Descriptive analysis and incidence calculation for macro-regions were performed. Results: A total of 3,829 notifications were analyzed. Children under one year of age were the most affected (39.1%) and the intramuscular route was responsible for 29.4% of errors. The most frequent error was administration of vaccine outside the recommended age (37.7%). The highest incidence was observed in the macro-regions Vale do Aço (26.5/100,000) and North Triangle (22.6/100,000). Conclusion: Immunization errors showed heterogeneous incidence among the macro-regions of the state of Minas Gerais from 2015 to 2019, and the administration of vaccines outside the recommended age was the most reported error.
