Resumo: | This article analyzes teacher training in the area of childhood education and the early years of primary school both in Brazil and in Portugal. Through hermeneutical and comparative approaches, we present the ways courses are organized in both countries, their definitions, objectives and purposes, considering the relationship between humane and technical trainings. Therefore, we analyze Brazilian and Portuguese legislations, pedagogical projects for the researched courses, and we also conduct interviews with directors and coordinators of fifteen Education and Pedagogy courses in Brazilian federal universities and four teacher training courses for Pre-School Education and the First Cycle of Basic Schooling in public Portuguese universities. We come to the conclusion that the weakened presence of a wide cultural basis in teacher training syllabi is not only a national trend but also a global[1] one, which seriously harms the professionalization of future generations and compromises the ideals of Education as a pursuit of democratic citizenship.
