CHECKING THE VERACITY OF THE CONTENT OF YOUTUBE VIDEOS THAT UNIVERSITY STUDENTS USE TO STUDY

Resumo: | Higher education students have used Youtube as a source of study, however, in a context of misinformation, attention is needed regarding the use of this social network. With the aim of analyzing how university students check the veracity of the content of Youtube videos they use to study, a qualitative research was carried out using Grounded Theory. 194 responses were collected through an online questionnaire and 23 online interviews were carried out. The data were analyzed with the help of Atlas.TI software. Students trusting on platform data - for example, using the number of views as a criterion for choosing a video - are more exposed to misinformation. The students surveyed also indicated different strategies to check the content of the videos - how to compare the content with other sources - and reported that this learning of verification stemmed from their experiences at university, family and internet. Thus, maximizing the benefits and minimizing the harmful consequences of using Youtube for studies depends on a critical use of this technology by students. |

Con el fin de analizar cómo los estudiantes universitarios verifican la veracidad del contenido de los videos de Youtube que utilizan para estudiar, se realizó una investigación cualitativa utilizando la teoría fundamentada. Se recogieron 194 respuestas a través de un cuestionario online y se realizaron 23 entrevistas online. Los datos se analizaron usando el software Atlas.TI usando Grounded Theory. Se observó que los estudiantes que confían en los datos de la plataforma, como el uso de la cantidad de vistas como criterio para elegir un video, pueden dejarlos más expuestos a la información errónea. Los estudiantes encuestados también indicaron diferentes estrategias para verificar el contenido de los videos, como comparar el contenido con otras fuentes, e informaron que este aprendizaje de verificación surgió de sus experiencias en la universidad, la familia e Internet. Por lo tanto, maximizar los beneficios y minimizar los daños del uso de Youtube para los estudios depende de un uso crítico de esta tecnología por parte de los estudiantes.Os estudantes do Ensino Superior têm utilizado o Youtube como uma fonte de estudo, contudo em um contexto de desinformação é preciso atenção no uso dessa rede social. Com o objetivo de analisar como os estudantes universitários checam a veracidade do conteúdo de vídeos do Youtube que utilizam para estudar, realizou-se uma pesquisa qualitativa com o uso da Teoria Fundamentada. Foram coletadas 194 respostas por meio de questionário on-line e realizadas 23 entrevistas on-line. Os dados foram analisados com auxílio do software Atlas.TI com o uso da Teoria Fundamentada. Notou-se que os estudantes ao confiarem em dados da plataforma - como utilizarem o número de visualizações como critério de escolha de um vídeo - pode deixá-los mais expostos à desinformação. Os estudantes pesquisados também indicaram diferentes estratégias de checagem do conteúdo dos vídeos – como comparar o conteúdo com outras fontes - e relataram que esse aprendizado de verificação decorreu de suas experiências na universidade, família e internet.
