State of the art: historical aspects and theoretical and methodological foundations

Resumo: This essay aims to discuss historical aspects, contemporary expression in the scientific scenario and the theoretical and methodological foundations of the State of the Art (SA). Based on the incursion into bibliographic sources of authors that dedicated to its study, we seek to draw a panorama of how it came to be constituted until the present decade, the production in theses and dissertations that used SA as a research modality, in order to observe its growth in the Brazilian academic field in different areas of knowledge and historical period. In addition, we systematize its theoretical and methodological foundations, presenting to researchers, in the form of guidance, indicatives for its development. The relevance of the text consists of considering the SA as a type of scientifically qualified research that meets the need for an in-depth understanding of reality and its multiple phenomena. A partir de incursão em fontes bibliográficas de autores que se dedicam ao seu estudo, buscamos traçar um panorama de como veio se constituindo, até a presente década, a produção em teses e dissertações que utilizaram o EA como modalidade de pesquisa, a fim de observar seu crescimento no meio acadêmico brasileiro em diferentes áreas do conhecimento e período históricos. Além disso, sistematizamos seus fundamentos teórico-metodológicos, apresentando a pesquisadores, em forma de orientação, indicativos para seu desenvolvimento. A relevância do texto consiste no olhar ao EA como tipo de pesquisa qualificada cientificamente e que atende a necessidade de apreensão aprofundada da realidade e seus múltiplos fenômenos.
