Resumo: Osmanthus fragrans Lour. (Oleaceae) is native of southwest China, reaching from three to ten metre tall with spring flowers with a pleasant fragrance. It is appreciated for use in landscaping, in the manufacture of cosmetics and medicines. The objective this work was to evaluate the effect of doses of indolbutyric acid (IBA) in sweet olive on rooting semi-hardwood cuttings. Treatments consisted of cut immersion for 10 s in the following IBA in water-alcohol solution T1 = 0 T2 = 1500 T3 = 3000, T4 = 6000 mgL-1. Cutting was performed in polyethylene container of 128 cells, filled with carbonized rice hull substrate and were kept in a greenhouse with intermittent mist in the spring/summer 2009, during 98 days. The experimental design was randomized blocks with four blocks of 12 cuttings in the parcel.Cut rooting and vegetative growth were evaluated. All the leaves remained attached to stems throughout the course of the experiment, without leaf abscission. The percentage of rooting increased in 5.24% for each 1000 mg L-1 of IBA added. Therefore, semi-hardwood cuts from sweet olive presented linear increase in root formation under increased concen- trations of AIB. Although similar increment was no recorded in the other variables measured. The percentage mean of rooting presented amplitude from 31.3 to 65.6%.
