Resumo:  Populational dynamics of Geophagus brasiliensis (Quoy & Gaimard, 1824) was studied from September/ 1995 to August/1996, through bi monthly samples at the Águas Belas reservoir, Viamão, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil (30°02'22"S and 51°01'11.5'W). Individuais were captured using a beach reine 10 m long, 2 m high and a circular fishing net, both with 5 mm of mesh size. The reproductive period begins in October, with maximum reproduction activity in November and February, ending on march. The absolute fecundity was estimated 566 ± 142 oocytes, in females ranging from 7.28 to 13.17 cm. The size at the first maturation was between 8 and 9 cm.

The size at the first maturation was between 8 and 9 cm. O estudo da dinâmica reprodutiva de Geophagus brasiliensis foi realizado durante o período compreendido entre setembro de 1995 e agosto de 1996, através de coletas quinzenais no açude "Águas Belas", no município de Viamão, Rio Grande do Sul (30°02'22"S e 51 001 , 11.5V). Os exemplares foram capturados através de rede de arrasto de praia com 10 m de comprimento e 2 m de altura e tarrafa, ambas com abertura de 0,5 cm entre nós adjacentes. Foram feitas medições do comprimento total e peso, determinação do sexo e avaliação do estado gonadal. O período reprodutivo da espécie foi determinado pela presença de fêmeas maduras, índice gonadossomático, fator de condição e medidas do diâmetro ovocitário. A época reprodutiva iniciou em outubro estendendo-se até março, com picos reprodutivos em novembro e fevereiro. A fecundidade absoluta foi determinada como sendo de 566 ± 142 ovócitos para fêmeas com comprimentos entre 7,28 e 13,17 cm.
