Resumo:  In this article, some aspects conceming the biology of "Tick-Borne Diseases", transmitted by the cattle tick Boophilus microplus are discussed. Although bovine babesiosis has been known over a century, the disease remains as a challenge to researchers in many disciplines. The use of chemotherapy and the introduction of live vaccines are measures that control with reasonabble efficiency the problem but do not solve it. lmprovement in the field of babesiosis and anaplasmosis immunology marfe possible to develop some concepts: immunity is not dependent on the presence of the infection, antibodies have an important role in protection, and prevention can be achieved by dead antigenic material. Progress in the understanding of lhe biology of Babesia and Anaplasma species, specially the establishment of in vitro cultures, may contribute to the control of babesiosis and anaplasmosis.

Embora a babesiose bovina seja conhecida há mais de um século, a enfermidade permanece como um desafio para pesquisadores em diversas áreas. A utilização de quimioterápicos e a introdução de vacinas vivas são medidas que atenuam o problema, mas que ainda não resolvem definitivamente a presente situação. Importantes progressos, no campo da imunologia da babesiose e da anaplasmose, permitiram alguns avanços conceituais, tais como: a imunidade não é dependente da presença da infecção, anticorpos têm um importante papel na proteção e esta pode ser alcançada com material antigênico morto. Os progressos mais recentes no entendimento da biologia das espécies de Babesia e de Anaplasma em particular, o estabelecimento de cultivos in vitro, poderão permitir importantes passos no desenvolvimento mais efetivo do controle da babesiose e anaplasmose bovina. Departamento de Diagnóstico e Pesquisa Agropecuária.
