Fruit size in kiwi trees based on the number of seeds

Resumo: This study evaluated the influence of the number of seeds of four kiwifruit cultivars aboutthe fresh weight, length and width of fruits. The research used four kiwifruit cultivars (Monty,Elmwood, Abbott and Bruno) grafted on rootstock 'Bruno', conducted in support system type T, withspacing of 6.00 m x 3.00 m, and mixed pruning system. Samples of 30 fruits per cultivar wererandomly collected in April 2008. The fresh mass, in grams, length and width of fruit, in millimeters,were associated with the number of seeds per fruit by regression analysis. The results showed that themajor number of seeds per fruit resulted in bigger size kiwis in all cultivars. The required number ofseeds per fruit to achieve standard commercial in Elmwood and Monty cultivars was approximately400 seeds, while for cultivars Bruno and Abbott it was approximately 600-700 seeds. The fruit shaperanged according to the cultivar: Elmwood and Monty had larger mass and diameter per fruit, whileBruno had the largest relation between fruit length and diameter. An effective pollination must becarried in kiwifruit orchards for obtaining larger fruit size and higher productivity levels.

Utilizaram-se quatro cultivares dequivizeiro (Monty, Elmwood, Abbott e Bruno), enxertadas sobre o porta-enxerto Bruno, conduzidasem sistema de sustentação tipo T, com espaçamento de 6,00 m x 3,00 m e poda mista. Foramcoletados aleatoriamente, em abril de 2008, 30 frutos por cultivar. Associou-se, pela análise deregressão, a massa fresca, em gramas; comprimento e largura dos frutos, em milímetros, com onúmero de sementes por fruto. Os resultados mostraram que quanto maior o número de sementes porfruto, maior o seu tamanho, para todas as cultivares. O número necessário de sementes por fruto, paraatingir um padrão comercial (80g), foi de aproximadamente 400 sementes nas cultivares Elmwood eMonty, enquanto nas cultivares Bruno e Abbott foi de 600 a 700 sementes. O formato dos frutosvariou conforme a cultivar, tendo a Elmwood e Monty maior massa e diâmetro enquanto a ‘Bruno’maior relação entre comprimento/diâmetro. Uma polinização eficiente deve ser assegurada empomares de quivi para obtenção de frutos de maior tamanho e alcance de maiores produtividades.Departamento de Diagnóstico e Pesquisa Agropecuária.
