Resumo: | The final yield of crops is influenced by several factors, the quality of seed deposited to the soil at planting being one of the most important. Large seeds tend to have higher strength and be better equipped for the emergence, development and final yield of crops. The experiment was conducted at the Experimental UTFPR Campus of Pato Branco, PR, and aimed to evaluate the development and productivity of 14 different sizes and shapes of seed corn. Different shapes and sizes were obtained in the classification of a processing unit for seeds of maize (UBS) by means of oblong and round sieves. The experimental design was randomized blocks with four repetitions, totaling 56 experimental units, each consisting of five rows of sowing and 4 meters in length. It evaluated the percentage of germination, final plant height, ear diameter, ear length, number of kernel rows per ear, number of kernels per row, thousand grain weight and average yield of corn. It was concluded that the different sizes and shapes of seeds did not affect significantly the parameters evaluated. |

Sementes de maior tamanho tendem a apresentar maior vigor e dispor de melhores condições para a emergência, desenvolvimento e produtividade final das culturas. O experimento foi realizado na Área Experimental da UTFPR, Campus Pato Branco, PR, e teve por objetivo avaliar o desenvolvimento e produtividade de 14 diferentes tamanhos e formatos de sementes de milho, obtidos na classificação de uma unidade de beneficiamento de sementes de milho (UBS), por meio de peneiras de crivo oblongo e redondo. O delineamento experimental utilizado foi de blocos ao acaso com quatro repetições, totalizando 56 unidades experimentais, cada qual composta por 5 fileiras de semeadura com 4 metros de comprimento cada. Avaliaram-se a porcentagem de germinação da cultura, altura final de plantas, diâmetro de espiga, comprimento de espiga, número de fileiras de grãos por espiga, número de grãos por fileira, massa de mil grãos e rendimento médio da cultura do milho. Concluiu-se que os diferentes tamanhos e formatos de sementes utilizados não influenciaram significativamente nenhum dos parâmetros avaliados. Departamento de Diagnóstico e Pesquisa Agropecuária.
