Resumo: Introduction: During the aging process, some cognitive functions remain stable and others decrease. The individual begins to present neurological symptoms that are often seen as normal by family members, due to the stereotype of old age; however, a complete history must be obtained to correctly know the cognitive status of the elderly person. Objective: to analyze the cognitive status of hospitalized older adults and their sociodemographic characteristics. Method: quantitative, cross-sectional study, carried out in two university hospitals in the state of Paraíba. We collected data between August 2019 and July 2020 and used The Brazil Old Age Schedule and Mini Mental State Examination questionnaires. The data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Results: in the cognitive state, the memory domain had the lowest score (1.0), while orientation had the highest score (8.0). Among those with cognitive impairment, 67.4% were women, 53.3% were over 70 years old, 69.6% had more than three years of education, 57.6% did not have partners, however, 84.8% They lived with someone and 78.3% received between one and two minimum wages. Only marital status reached statistical significance (p = 0.031). Conclusion: as age advances, cognitive deficit increases. On the other hand, as the years of study and income increase, the lower the cognitive deficit, gender influences the domain of attention and calculation, so that older men presented hig.her rates compared to women

Se utilizaron los cuestionarios Brazil Old Age Schedule y Mini Mental State Examination. In Derme; Vol. 97 No. 4 (2023): Out.
