INTRINSIC CASE STUDY OF A PREMATURE NEWBORN: PAINFUL PROCEDURES

Objective: to identify and describe the invasive/painful procedures and analgesic measures applied to an extremely premature newborn during the period of hospitalization in a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Method: this is an observational research, case study type of intrinsic, quantitative, descriptive and analytical character. Data were collected from the medical records of an infant who was born with a gestational age of 26 weeks and followed-up at the Kangaroo Outpatient Clinic of a teaching hospital in the interior of the state of Paraná. Results: the newborn was submitted to 368 invasive and painful procedures during the entire period of hospitalization (73 days), with airway aspiration being the prevalent procedure performed 217 times. Of these procedures, 64% were performed with the use of analgesia and 36% without analgesic measures. Final Considerations: the painful procedures to which the NB was submitted during the hospitalization period were significant. Through an effective and safe action, the pharmacological method was prescribed to minimize pain.
