Introduction: During the treatment of pediatric cancer, the role of caring is generally assigned to the mother, who undergo several difficulties during treatment. One of the ways to identify adversities and how mothers deal with sudden change of life is through the Theory of Social Representations. Objective: to apprehend the social representations of mothers of children in cancer treatment about cancer and their mental state in coping with it. Methodology: This is a qualitative study of a descriptive-explanatory approach, which occurred in a philanthropic treatment institution in the city of Teresina (PI), Brazil. Data collection occurred in November 2016 with 17 mothers. Results: the statements attributed by the subjects were classified in the thematic categories: Social representations by mothers of children with cancer on cancer, Social representations by mothers on cancer treatment, Social representations of mothers on their children, and Social representations of mothers on their feelings, where it was observed that mainly the fear of losing a child and the abrupt change of routine and the long period of treatment are the most difficult adversities to be overcome. Conclusion: this study revealed the reality of the mothers and their children in cancer treatment, preponderantly, the meaning of cancer and the treatment of it, evidencing the importance of the nurse during this process.
