Objective: to determine the prevalence and factors associated with the use of medicinal plants in the municipality of Rondonópolis, state of Mato Grosso. Method: this is a population-based study with 370 individuals. Data were collected during home visits through a semi-structured and standardized questionnaire. A logistic regression model was applied for multivariate analysis by adopting a level of significance of 5%. Results: the prevalence of the use of medicinal plants in the studied population was 42.70% (n=158). This practice is associated to the age over 60 years (OR=1.41; CI95% 1.07-1.85) and diagnosis of chronic disease (OR= 1.36; CI95% 1.03-1.79). Women had lower prevalence of medicinal plants consumption (p=0.0141). The most used herbal species were lemongrass, peppermint and boldo. The plants preferably consumed in the form of tea and syrup. Conclusion: the results indicate the need to adopt educational actions that seek to raise awareness among the population about the risks of using medicinal plants indiscriminately.
