Resumo: Objective: To identify available available in the scientific literature on the use of health information technology aimed at effective communication for patient safety. Method: Integrative literature review in the MEDLINE, LILACS and ScienceDirect databases. 14 original articles were included and indexed in international journals, in Portuguese, English, Spanish and German, with a time frame from 2013 to 2018. Results: The studies address the development of health technologies, such as preparations and electronic forms, as well as applications to exchange messages. They use fast interprofessional communication and optimize access time and information sharing. The agility and clarity of information determine safer actions for the patient. However, it is recommended that these technologies be related to verbal dialogue, an end to humanitarian relations within care practices. Conclusion: The use of communication technologies produces excellent results in the effectiveness of patient safety, in the intra and extra-hospital environment, such as at home. This is evidenced by the improved response time of receiving information on the use of technology available on smartphones, tablets, notebooks and computers, in addition to reducing the use of paper, maintaining standardized data, preventing information loss and optimizing time. . Thus, it provides better effectiveness of interprofessional communication and benefits in patient health and safety, in person or remotely.
