Resumo: Objective: to evaluate the records of the nursing staff in a renal dialysis unit before and after in-service training. Method: a quasi-experimental study before and after series type performed in a renal dialysis unit. Document analysis was used to assess nursing records before and after in-service training regarding compliance with specific legislation. The pre-intervention document analysis considered the medical records of patients who were treated in May and June 2015. In the post-intervention period, the medical records of patients treated between September and November 2015 were evaluated. Results: 49 professionals participated in the in-service training of nursing. A total of 10727 nursing records were evaluated, with 4043 before and 6684 after training. The largest number of records was made by nursing technicians. The variables incomplete patient identification (p<0.001), absence of time (p<0.001), absence of signature (p<0.001), absence of stamp/professional identification (p<0.001), illegible handwriting (p<0.001), spelling errors (p=0.045) and incomplete dialysis room sheet (p<0.001) showed a better adequacy percentage after the intervention. Erasures (p=0.290) were not impacted by the intervention. Lack of date (p=0.003) and non-standardized abbreviations (p<0.001) increased after the intervention. Conclusion: in-service training can improve the quality of nursing records in a renal dialysis unit.
