Objectives: to understand the meaning of work for hospital nurses - Minas Gerais. Method: a descriptive study with a qualitative approach, performed with 50 nurses from the hospital. The data collection was done through an interview with the application of the Cutting and Gluing Technique with Gibis and the data analyzed through Content Analysis. Results: five categories emerged: The sense of work: pleasure and satisfaction of nurses; Sense of work: professional identity; Sense of work: subjectivities developed by the worker in the performance of his work activity; Sense of work: personal and professional interaction; Sense of work: suffering. It was evidenced aspects that make up the individual, organizational and social dimensions of the meaning of work. Conclusion: most nurses attributed positive work sense satisfaction and pleasure in work performance, creating values and subjectivities for personal and professional growth influencing the improvement of the work process, the quality of work provided and the life of nurses.
