Resumo: Objective: to know the health needs of women deprived of their liberty and how they develop self-care in health. Method: Qualitative case study, developed in a prison in the south of the country, in which 11 women in a closed system participated. Data were produced through interviews, observation and document analysis, between July and October 2017 and the statements were submitted to thematic analysis. Results: The analytical topics covered notions of health, self-care practices and health needs of women deprived of their liberty. Conclusion: the notions of health circulated between the conception related to the biomedical model (absence of diseases) and those close to health promotion (resources for a good life). Prison precariousness and inadequate care for basic needs negatively affected the female health-disease process. Consequently, the medicalization of walking through life in deprivation of liberty was the predominant practice of self-care. Improvements are suggested in the prison unit with a view to promoting health, human rights and citizenship for women deprived of their liberty.

In Derme; Vol. 96 No. 40 (2022): Out.
