Resumo: Objective: To evaluate the risk of falls of patients in a medical clinic unit. Method: Documentary, transversal, descriptive study, carried out from May to July, 2018, in a medical clinic of a university hospital of Rio de Janeiro using Morse Fall Scale. Including inpatients, aged 18 years or over. Excluded those hospitalized less than 24 hours and absent from the sector to perform exams or procedures. Data were tabulated and analyzed descriptively. Results: Consulted 53 pacients; the highest percentual female (34-64%); aged 18-97; had no history of falls (35-66%); presented secondary diagnosis (48 - 90.6%); wandered alone or with help or were bedridden (53 - 100%); used intravenous therapy (48 - 90.6%); had normal gait, did not walk, were bedridden or had a wheelchair (32-60.4%), and were oriented(45-84.9%). Eighteen (33.9%) had a fall in the last three months prior to hospitalization and four (7.6) fell during the period. The medical records were consulted. Most of the patients presented high risk at the beginning and the end of their hospitalization. Conclusion: from the risk assessment for falls it is possible to create prevention strategy.

Most of the patients presented high risk at the beginning and the end of their hospitalization. Conclusion: from the risk assessment for falls it is possible to create prevention strategy.
