Family organization in the context of the childhood with cerebral palsy: a case study

Objective: to evaluate the organization of a family registered in a Family Health Strategy unit, for the care of a child with cerebral palsy according to the Calgary Family Assessment Model. Method: a case study with a qualitative approach carried out in a Family Health Strategy located in a municipality in northern Minas Gerais, during April and May 2019. The Global Assessment of Relational Functioning scale was used to assess functionality. For data collection, a semi-structured interview was carried out during a home visit and reading of the medical records. The GenoPro® software was used to make the genogram and ecomap. Results: the family of the index patient is simultaneously in the following stages of the life cycle: family with young children; with preschool children and school children. According to the Global Assessment of Relational Functioning scale, the family was classified as high risk, with 15 points. Conclusion: the family studied showed difficulties in adapting to the demands imposed by the health condition of the index patient. The use of the Calgary Family Assessment Model enabled the professional responsible for family assistance to understand its dynamics, in addition to identifying the needs experienced and formulating care and coping strategies. It was evident that the disruption and failure to adapt to changes in the family system directly interfered in the quality of life of its members.
