VIOLENCE AGAINST THE ELDERLY AND SOCIAL SUPPORT FOR PROTECTION AND COATING

Objectives: To identify the episodes of violence committed against the elderly person and to know the social support measures sought by the elderly to face situations of violence. Methodology: Exploratory-descriptive study of qualitative design carried out in the city of Araruna, state of Paraíba, with six elderly victims of violence. Data were obtained through semi-structured interviews and later submitted to the content analysis technique. Results: The following categories were constructed: Category 1 - Violence suffered by the elderly: episodes of physical, psychological and financial violence were evidenced, experienced mainly in the intra-family environment and practiced by a family member close to the victim; Category 2 - Socio-family support as a mechanism to protect against violence: as support measures, it was observed that the elderly used the Specialized Reference Center for Social Assistance (CREAS) as the main support measure, their own family and society, in particular, the support of neighbors. Final considerations: The fragility of measures to protect and control violence against the elderly raises the strengthening of surveillance of life and their rights, integrated with education processes on the nuances of violence and instruction to denounce and seek protection and support mechanisms social.
