Resumo: The improvement of technology in Neonatal Intensive Care Units has increased the survival of children with severe health conditions. Thus, a new clientele for nursing care appears. Thus, the objective of this study was to analyze how academic training equips nurses to work in Neonatal and Pediatric Intensive Care Units in the care of CRIANES and their families. This is a descriptive-exploratory study with a qualitative approach, developed in a reference hospital in the north of Ceará, which has a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU). 10 nurses who work in these units participated, through the application of a semi-structured interview in the months of May and June / 2019. The results showed the need to sensitize the professional since his academic training to family-centered care, as well as the importance of the nurse's role for the development of skills and competences of the family caregiver and the need for guidance from this caregiver. The desire to expand practical experiences during the training of nurses was also highlighted, since when asked about their experiences with CRIANES, most revealed that in a theoretical perspective this theme was not addressed. Therefore, there is a need to evolve in relation to public practices and policies aimed at children with special health needs and their families so that their overload is minimized and so that we can contribute to this group in a resolute way and in all their needs.
