Godard in Mozambique: The pursuit of an image of independence

Resumo: | This article is an investigation into the work of filmmaker Jean-Luc Godard and his production company Sonimage in Mozambique in 1978, in a joint project with the Marxist government of the newly independent country. The project consisted of the production of a series called Birth (of the Image) of a Nation, which Godard treated as a report on Mozambicans' relationship with the image in order to provide guidelines for the implementation of a television network in the country. The project was interesting for both: for FRELIMO, which was investing in cinema as a way of building identity; and for Godard, who in recent years had been dedicating himself to the investigation of mass communication, and saw an opportunity to create television in a territory not yet dominated by the Western audiovisual industry. Despite this convergence, the project did not prosper, but it still has many historical, aesthetic and political connections: a European filmmaker in Africa, in the political effervescence of post-independence, at the invitation of a left-wing government, willing to experiment in the field of image and representation. Here we will consider the impasses faced in this experience and the possible contradictions of the idealized project, at the crossroads between the European filmmaker's artistic career and the cultural policy of the African country in the process of decolonization. |

El proyecto consistía en realizar una serie titulada Nacimiento (de la imagen) de una nación, que Godard trataría como un informe sobre la relación de los mozambiqueños con la imagen, con el fin de proporcionar directrices para la implantación de una red de televisión en el país. El proyecto era interesante para ambos: para el FRELIMO, que apostaba por el cine como forma de construir identidad; y para Godard, que en los últimos años se había dedicado a investigar la comunicación de masas, y vio una oportunidad de crear televisión en un territorio aún no dominado por la industria audiovisual occidental. A pesar de esta convergencia, el proyecto no prosperó, pero sigue teniendo muchas conexiones históricas, estéticas y políticas: un cineasta europeo en África, en la efervescencia política de la postindependencia, invitado por un gobierno de izquierdas, dispuesto a experimentar en el campo de la imagen y la representación. Consideraremos aquí los impasses a los que se enfrenta esta experiencia y las posibles contradicciones del proyecto idealizado, en la encrucijada entre la carrera artística del cineasta europeo y la política cultural del país africano en proceso de descolonización.Cet article est une investigation sur le travail du cinéaste Jean-Luc Godard et de sa société Sonimage au Mozambique en 1978, dans le cadre d'un projet commun avec le gouvernement marxiste du pays nouvellement indépendant. Le projet consistait à réaliser une série intitulée Naissance (de l'image) d'une nation, que Godard traiterait comme un rapport sur la relation des Mozambicains à l'image, afin de fournir des lignes directrices pour la mise en place d'un réseau de télévision dans le pays. Le projet est intéressant pour les deux parties. Pour le FRELIMO, qui investissait dans le cinéma comme moyen de construction identitaire, et pour Godard, qui se consacrait depuis quelques années à la recherche sur la communication de masse, et qui voyait une opportunité de créer une télévision dans un territoire qui n'était pas encore dominé par l'industrie audiovisuelle occidentale. Malgré cette convergence, le projet n'a pas prospéré, mais il conserve de nombreux liens historiques, esthétiques et politiques : un cinéaste européen en Afrique, dans l'effervescence politique de l'après-indépendance, à l'invitation d'un gouvernement de gauche, désireux d'expérimenter dans le domaine de l'image et de la représentation. Nous examinerons ici les impasses de cette expérience et les contradictions possibles du projet idéalisé, à la croisée de la carrière artistique du cinéaste européen et de la politique culturelle du pays africain en voie de décolonisation. Este artigo é uma investigação sobre a atuação do cineasta Jean-Luc Godard e sua produtora Sonimage em Moçambique, em 1978, em um projeto em conjunto com o governo marxista do país recém-independente. O projeto consistia na realização de uma série que se chamaria Nascimento (da Imagem) de uma Nação, que Godard trataria como um relatório da relação dos moçambicanos com a imagem para fornecer as diretrizes para implementação de uma rede de televisão no país. O projeto era interessante para ambos: para a FRELIMO, que investia no cinema como forma de construção identitária; e para Godard, que nos últimos anos vinha se dedicando à investigação da comunicação de massa, e viu uma oportunidade de criar uma televisão em um território ainda não dominado pela indústria audiovisual do ocidente. Apesar dessa convergência, o projeto não prosperou mas, ainda assim, traz muitos entroncamentos históricos, estéticos e políticos: um cineasta europeu em África, na efervescência política da pós-independência, a convite de um governo de esquerda, disposto a realizar experimentações no campo da imagem e representação. Aqui pensaremos os impasses enfrentados nessa experiência e possíveis contradições do projeto idealizado, no cruzamento entre a trajetória artística do cineasta europeu e a política cultural do país africano em processo de descolonização.
